When confronted with their lies and misdeeds, children are fond of invoking “I forgot” or “I did not know” and ask for forgivenes by promises “I will not do it again” - in ancient Greece such misdeeds concerned “Mnemosine”, a deity who stood for mind and memory. Recently, three major Mobile corporate citizens committed misdeeds – illegal storage of sulfuric acid, shipping coal, and cutting heritage oak trees prior to securing a permit - once caught (not by authorities but alert citizens) lawyers invoked circumstances falling in the sphere of Mnemosine - and the consequences were minimal and "public shame" of stinky kids or corporations is generally avoided ... but a larger question stands - are these signs of abuse or contempt by some corporations a portent of more to come?

And again this brings back Mnemosine and her link with QUID CUSTODIA CUSTODES? - who guards the guards? - non-elected members of boards, committees and other non-elected consultants are not necessarily advocates of a better quality of life in this community - their guardians are appointed officials. One element of a SOLUTION is already evident - growing public demands for transparency - elected officials must assure the public that those whom they appoint are advocates of the whole community - the notion of appointing a mix of "special" interests representatives is not democratic - transparency demands records inclusive of declarations of conflicts of interests, voting and recusals regardless if the representative is appointed or elected.
